About Mary Cobine
Hello, welcome to the McKinney Art House. My name is Mary Cobine and I’m an artist just like you!! I say this because we are all learning new things and clay has an unlimited amount of opportunities for creativity. I believe if you have a passion for creating art then you are an artist.
My family and friends say my hands are always busy. I love to crochet and now I design and create my own line of clothing under my label High Thyme Design. With my clay I’ve learned there’s a lot of ways to achieve what I envision. I laugh, because they’re not always perfect, but the saying is “it’s only dirt!” After 10 years of studying, both here at the McKinney Art House and with other instructors, I thought it was time to jump into teaching. I want to make the experience fun for everyone who tries and if you outgrow me, we either grow together or I help you find that next level instructor so you can develop your passion for clay art.
I’m inspired by nature in many of my pieces and I pull in textures and color to reflect what I feel and see. Most of my pieces have been functional art but I like to try new things so I’ve been branching off into molding and sculpting. My work is primarily hand built. I love the way a piece of flat slab can be molded into any shape you want. Wheel throwing can be daunting at times, and meditative at other times. Sometimes it can calm the soul and other times the idea of smashing and wedging a hard piece of clay into a malleable ball in my hands is invigorating! Everyone has their own interpretation of what clay does for them. At the McKinney Art House Pottery Barn I hope to help you find what this medium can mean to you.
Join me in a class setting or sign up for a personal lesson where we can laugh and create together. Learn that anything is possible, not perfect, but definitely a way to learn what you are capable of creating.
