Jennifer Burke
Jennifer Burke discovered her passion for clay over ten years ago when she took a pottery class at the Art House. Since then she has continued to work in clay; developing her skills through workshops, classes, and many hours of studio practice. She maintains a private studio space and her work is available locally at The LAST Art Gallery in downtown McKinney and on line through her Etsy shop. Her work is in homes throughout the United States, Canada, England, Switzerland, and Australia thanks to her Etsy site.
She enjoys teaching pottery classes - focusing on the basic skills of wheel throwing and hand building for beginners - and encouraging students to select their own projects while guiding them to develop and incorporate more advanced skills and techniques as they progress.
One of the things she enjoys about teaching ceramics is how much we can learn about ourselves and the natural world from working with clay. To make a mug the potter learns to consider the intended user, their size, their proportions - big fingers need a bigger handle, and so on. The process of designing and making a pot becomes a way of developing and enhancing problem solving skills. Skills that will help the student in all areas of their life.
Jennifer’s work can be viewed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jenniferburkepottery/ or on Instagram @jenniferburkepottery. Jennifer is an active member of SPARC (St Peters Artist Run Community), serves on the 2018 McKinney Artist’s Studio Tour planning committee, and is an active volunteer potter with McKinney Empty Bowls. Jennifer teaches pottery classes on Thursday evenings and Friday mornings.
